Talk to travel expertOverview and Highlights of Gokyo Lakes Trek 13 Days
The Gokyo Lakes Trek – 13 Days with Glorious Eco Trek Nepal is a peaceful and scenic journey through the Everest region, offering a less crowded yet equally breathtaking alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp Trek. Starting from Kathmandu with a thrilling flight to Lukla, the trail introduces trekkers to the lush valleys and rushing rivers of Sagarmatha National Park. Unlike the busier routes, this trek is often recommended among the Best Trekking Routes in Nepal for Beginners who want to experience stunning Himalayan landscapes at a relaxed pace while still encountering iconic peaks like Everest, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu.
Your adventure takes you through charming Sherpa settlements such as Phakding, Dole, and Machhermo, before arriving at Namchee Bazar, the cultural and commercial hub of the Khumbu. Here, trekkers can explore bustling markets, enjoy traditional Sherpa hospitality, and marvel at panoramic mountain vistas. Much like the rest stops built into the Everest Panorama Trek , this acclimatization stop allows travelers to adjust to the higher altitude while soaking in local culture. The trek gradually ascends toward the Gokyo Valley, where pristine glacial lakes sparkle against a backdrop of snow-capped giants, making the journey as spiritual as it is scenic.
One of the highlights is climbing Gokyo Ri (5,483 m), which rivals the famed views from Kala Patthar Mount Everest and offers a sweeping panorama of Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and the surrounding peaks. Standing here feels just as rewarding as reaching the heights of the Everest 3 Passes Trek, but in a more tranquil and less strenuous setting. The shimmering turquoise waters of the sacred Gokyo Lakes, considered holy by both Hindus and Buddhists, provide an otherworldly contrast to the rugged Himalayan terrain. This blend of natural beauty and cultural depth is what makes the trek stand out among the most captivating journeys in the Everest Region.
The return journey retraces the trail through alpine valleys and rhododendron forests before flying back to Kathmandu, leaving trekkers with lasting memories of emerald lakes, towering peaks, and heartfelt encounters with Sherpa communities. Just like in the EBC Trek With World Heritage Sightseeing Tour, every step combines adventure with discovery—be it through Buddhist monasteries, fluttering prayer flags, or warm evenings in mountain teahouses. With its perfect balance of moderate challenge, scenic immersion, and thoughtful Acclimatization stops, the Gokyo Lakes Trek is ideal for trekkers seeking an enriching Himalayan experience that offers both grandeur and serenity.

Meal: Breakfast
Day 02: Flight from Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,593 ft) to Lukla (2,850m/9,350 ft) Trek to Phakding (2650 m/ 8562 ft )
The most convenient way to begin Gokyo Ri’s journey is to take a flight to Lukla, a small region inhabited by Sherpas. During the first day of our expedition, we will catch a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla.
The picturesque trip from Kathmandu towards Lukla is approximately 35 to 45 minutes accompanied by a three-hour uphill and downhill path towards Phakding. It is noteworthy to mention that the arrival at Lukla airport is exhilarating.
Once you have landed in Lukla, you will join the guide, with whom you can discuss the excursion. You’ll grab a meal whilst you’re in the town and thereafter start ascending the route to Phakding. The hike along the Dudhkoshi River is simultaneously magnificent and comfortable.
Note: Due to excessive traffic and limited capacity at Tribhuvan International Airport during peak season, flights to Lukla are redirected from Kathmandu to Manthali Airport, Ramechhap.
This change improves flight operations, assuring a smooth experience for travelers heading to Lukla. Travelers must drive from Kathmandu to Manthali Airport and then fly to Lukla.
Activity: 3-4 hours
Max. Altitude: 2,850m/9,350ft. ()
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 03: Trek from Phakding (2,650 m/ 8,562 ft) to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,285 ft)

Our track leads us gradually into Sagarmatha National Park. The guides will help you get the permits you need. After passing the permission station, we would be moving downwards as we come nearer to the rivers beneath.
As the trail progresses, we’ll pass through some ancient communities in the Khumbu area. We shall explore the local communities. We may also anticipate encountering many animals on the pathway.
We’ll see a breathtaking panorama of snowcapped summits, adjacent peaks, and precipitous slopes once we reach Namche.

Max. Altitude: 3,440m/11,286ft. ()

Day 04: Rest day to acclimatize at Namche Bazaar
If you intend to travel to considerably higher elevations, gradually acclimating to the height is vital. The solution is to hike as far as possible throughout the daytime & sleep at low elevations.
Since the journey is at a high altitude, altitude sickness is a concern. The body system should adapt to changes in elevation and climate.
During your stay in Namche, you can go for a short sightseeing tour across the neighborhood, witness the ancient home in the area, explore Sherpas traditions, arts and heritage, visit the Sherpa museum and stop by restaurants and pubs for local foods and drinks.
Max. Altitude: 3,440m/11,286ft. ()

After some hours, we’ll arrive at Mong, which is among the Khumbu’s finest picturesque villages. Furthermore, the route makes its way to the Dudh Koshi River before continuing to Phortse Thenga.
During this journey, there could be mesmerizing waterfalls, plus we will discover rhododendrons and coniferous woodland.
At 4200 m, the path finally touches Dole. The panoramas of Khumbila and Tawoche mountains from Dole are breathtaking.

The journey from Dole to Machhermo is relatively simpler. The path begins in Dole and then climbs steeply via Lhabarma and Luza. The landscape, on the other hand, starts getting better each moment and above us starts to appear Cho Oyu.
Furthermore, the route goes on to Macchermo. An astonishing glimpse of Mt. Thamserku could be witnessed from the peak over Machhermo.
Activity: 4 hours
Max. Altitude: 4,470m/14,665ft. ()

On the sixth day, we will ascend from Machhermo to Gokyo, passing by various magnificent lakes. The path begins in Macchermo and ascends to a mesmerizing hill. The hilltop offers a breathtaking picture of Kangtega.
The first Gokyo Lake would be observed on the path. Beyond, there will be many exquisite pastoral panoramic views alongside a few shepherds’ vacation homes.
Eventually, we arrive at Gokyo. A delightful tiny town located on the banks of Gokyo’s 3rd lake which is Dudh Pokhari.

On the seventh day of our adventure, we will trek to Gokyo Ri. We begin early in the morning since we got a major journey in front of us. We would like to be certain that we achieve it during the clear morning hours. We will undertake a short trek from Gokyo village towards the foot of Gokyo Ri.
Gokyo Ri is just a 2,000-foot ascent from the base. The trail doesn’t seem hard to accomplish, but getting at the top, is like one of those experiences trekkers fantasize about.
Landscapes of Gokyo village, lakes, glaciers, as well as the surrounding mountain range could be perceived. There are also spectacular sights of the amazing Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal’s biggest glacier. Many of the earth’s tallest summits, including Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu, surround us.
Max. Altitude: 5,400m/17,717ft. ()
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 09: Trek from Gokyo (4,790m/15,584ft) to Phortse (3,950m/12,959ft)
We will start our journey from Gokyo to Phortse today, the seventh day. It’s a quick, mostly downhill trek back. We may pause for a few minutes to admire the magnificence of the mountains and be grateful for the privilege to participate in this expedition.
The only potentially difficult part is the walk down from Dole to Phortse Tenga, which may be dry and filled with dust and unpleasant on the legs.

The trail is steep, however, the climb isn’t really difficult. Through this, it’s a simple 1–2 hour trek down to Namche across the hill. You will have another opportunity to visit Namche Bazar before going back to Kathmandu.
Activity: 4 hours
Max. Altitude: 3,950m/12,959ft. ()
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 11: Trek from Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,285 ft) to Lukla 2,850 m/9,350 ft)
The returning route from Namche to Lukla requires around six hours. While strolling at a moderate pace, we pass many suspension bridges. You might recognize traveling alongside the trail a few days earlier. Furthermore, we’ll cross the Hillary Bridge as well as various additional bridges draped in Buddhist devotional banners.
We soak in the final glimpses of the snow-covered summits while we go over various forest trails embellished with rhododendron and pine trees that cover wide expanses of territory. Once we arrive in Lukla, we enjoy the night in a simple hotel and the remainder of our daytime sampling traditional foods. This would be the moment at which the adventure comes to an end.
