Gokyo Ri & Gokyo Lakes Trek – 11 Days Brief Insight

The Gokyo Valley Trek is a less-frequented alternative to the Everest Base Camp Trek. Enjoy hiking on the Gokyo Ri Trek’s less-traveled trail, which offers breathtaking vistas of towering snowy mountains, a magnificent glacier, and pure lakes.

Gokyo RI trip, also known as Gokyo valley trek or Gokyo lake trek, is a very short and low-altitude trek in the Everest region. The Gokyo lakes trip offers views of Mount Everest as well as mountains above 8,000m such as Cho Oyu, Mount Lhotse, and Mount Makalu.

Everest Gokyo RI Peak rises 5,483 m above sea level, and so the middle valley peak is between Everest base camp and Thame valley. Gokyo Ri Trek is one of the most stunning landscape treks and alpine meadows in the Khumbu region. In the sunset, the Everest Gokyo Ri walk provides a spectacular vista.

The Gokyo Lakes, which consist of six main lakes, is the world’s highest freshwater lake system. Sagarmatha National Park is home to the glistening turquoise Gokyo Lakes, which are sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists.

Gokyo Lake Trek is the ideal trekking tour for people looking for the best Everest views in a short amount of time. It’s also a wonderful path to go if you want to escape the Everest base camp Gokyo Ri trek’s throngs of tourists.

The Gokyo Ri Trek begins in Kathmandu. The entire route of Gokyo Ri Trek is Kathmandu to Lukla to Phakding to Namche Bazaar to Dole to Machhermo to Gokyo to early morning summit of Gokyo Ri, (5,400 m/ 17,814 ft ) and return to Gokyo.

Again trek from Gokyo to Phortse to Namche Bazaar to Lukla, and finally fly back to Kathmandu (1,400m / 4,593 ft) from Lukla (2,850m/9,350 ft)

The Gokyo Lake Journey is a much easier trek than the Everest Base Camp Trek. Gokyo Ri trek is the best for those with a lower fitness level who want to acclimatize to the altitude and see the most of Everest.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Flight from Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,593 ft) to Lukla (2,850m/9,350 ft) Trek to Phakding (2650 m/ 8562 ft )

Trek Distance :

140 km approx.

Highest Altitude :

Lukla (2,850m / 9,350ft)

Trek Duration :

3-4 hours

Meals :

Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

The most convenient way to begin Gokyo Ri’s journey is to take a flight to Lukla, a small region inhabited by Sherpas. During the first day of our expedition, we will catch a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla.

The picturesque trip from Kathmandu towards Lukla is approximately 35 to 45 minutes accompanied by a three-hour uphill and downhill path towards Phakding. It is noteworthy to mention that the arrival at Lukla airport is exhilarating.

Once you have landed in Lukla, you will join the guide, with whom you can discuss the excursion. You’ll grab a meal whilst you’re in the town and thereafter start ascending the route to Phakding. The hike along the Dudhkoshi River is simultaneously magnificent and comfortable.

Our track leads us gradually into Sagarmatha National Park. The guides will help you get the permits you need. After passing the permission station, we would be moving downwards as we come nearer to the rivers beneath.

As the trail progresses, we’ll pass through some ancient communities in the Khumbu area. We shall explore the local communities. We may also anticipate encountering many animals on the pathway.

We’ll see a breathtaking panorama of snowcapped summits, adjacent peaks, and precipitous slopes once we reach Namche.

If you intend to travel to considerably higher elevations, gradually acclimating to the height is vital. The solution is to hike as far as possible throughout the daytime & sleep at low elevations.

Since the journey is at a high altitude, altitude sickness is a concern. The body system should adapt to changes in elevation and climate.

During your stay in Namche, you can go for a short sightseeing tour across the neighborhood, witness the ancient home in the area, explore Sherpas traditions, arts and heritage, visit the Sherpa museum and stop by restaurants and pubs for local foods and drinks.

Gokyo Ri is just a 2,000-foot ascent from the base. The trail doesn’t seem hard to accomplish, but getting at the top, is like one of those experiences trekkers fantasize about.

Landscapes of Gokyo village, lakes, glaciers, as well as the surrounding mountain range could be perceived. There are also spectacular sights of the amazing Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal’s biggest glacier. Many of the earth’s tallest summits, including Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu, surround us.

The trail is steep, however, the climb isn’t really difficult. Through this, it’s a simple 1–2 hour trek down to Namche across the hill. You will have another opportunity to visit Namche Bazar before going back to Kathmandu.

Day 10: Trek from Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,285 ft) to Lukla 2,850 m/9,350 ft)
