Mount Kailash is a sacred pyramidal peak that draws pilgrims from many traditions to a place of deep peace and meaning. A visit here is not something that can be fully explained in words. Glorious Eco Trek Nepal invites you to join our 15 day Kailash Mansarovar yatra, created for travelers who wish to experience this holy land in a safe, steady, and comfortable way.
This journey is a spiritual and cultural pilgrimage to one of the most revered regions in Tibet. Kailash is sacred to Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon, and every step toward it carries a sense of devotion and discovery. Our overland route through Kerung makes the trip more affordable by removing the need to fly to Lhasa and avoiding long stays there, while still keeping the experience complete and authentic.
We include proper acclimatization days with gentle walks so your body adjusts naturally to the altitude. This tour suits those who want a calmer pace without rushing, allowing you to absorb the landscapes and the spirit of the journey.
Kailash stands at 6638 meters in western Tibet and is believed by Hindus to be the home of Lord Shiva. Buddhists connect it with Guru Padmasambhava, while Bon followers honor it as the spiritual heart of their ancient land. The three day parikrama around Kailash begins from Darchen and covers about 53 kilometers, crossing the beautiful Lhachu Valley, the high Drolma La pass, and the sacred stops of Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk, with a powerful view of Kailash’s north face.
We also take you to Lake Mansarovar at 4600 meters, a crystal clear lake revered as a place of purity and blessing. A comfortable drive around the lake gives time for prayer and quiet reflection, completing the pilgrimage.
Traveling between May and September offers the best weather and clearer skies. With Glorious Eco Trek Nepal, this 15 day overland yatra is a balanced blend of faith, nature, and personal renewal, guided with care from start to finish.

Packing list for Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour 15 Days
Packing appropriately for the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour is essential due to the remote terrain, high altitude, and changing weather conditions. The journey takes you through Tibet’s arid plateaus and over mountain passes, where temperatures can swing dramatically between day and night. Dressing in layers is key to staying warm, dry, and comfortable throughout the pilgrimage.
Essential clothing items include thermal innerwear, trekking pants, moisture-wicking shirts, and a high-quality down jacket for warmth at higher altitudes. A windproof and waterproof outer layer is highly recommended, as conditions can change quickly, especially near Lake Mansarovar and during the Kora around Mount Kailash. Don’t forget a woolen cap, sun hat, UV-protection sunglasses, and insulated gloves to protect against both sun and cold. Comfortable, well-broken-in trekking boots are crucial for walking during the 3-day Kailash Parikrama.
Other necessary items include a sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures, a durable duffle bag or rucksack for your main luggage, and a small daypack for essentials like water, snacks, and personal items. Toiletries, sunscreen, lip balm, reusable water bottles, and basic medications (for altitude sickness, headaches, and stomach issues) should also be included. Trip Information
Climate and best time for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Tibet and the Kailash region are known for dry, cold, and highly changeable weather. Even in the best season you may feel different conditions within the same day. Mornings are usually crisp and chilly, afternoons can be warm under strong sun, and late afternoon winds or sudden clouds are common. Nights remain cold and sometimes bring light snow near Mansarovar and along the kora route. Because of this, layering is essential and you should always keep a windproof jacket and warm hat handy.
The best travel window for Kailash Mansarovar overland tour is from May to early October when the climate is more stable and trails are open. May and June offer fresh landscapes, clear skies, and comfortable walking conditions. September and early October are also excellent because the air becomes sharper and the mountain views are outstanding after the monsoon period.
July and August are less preferred due to heavy monsoon rain on the Nepal side which can affect road travel, even though Tibet itself stays comparatively dry. Winter months from November to March are not suitable because of strong cold, heavy snow, and the risk of the Drolma La Pass becoming impassable.
Difficulty level of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
This yatra is a high altitude pilgrimage and naturally demanding. The main challenges are altitude and unpredictable weather, not the roads. The Tibetan highways are wide and smooth, and long drives are done in comfortable private vehicles, making overland travel easier than in past years.
Accommodation up to Saga and Darchen is in neat, warm hotels. During the kailash kora, guest houses in Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk are simple but clean, usually with shared rooms and limited facilities. Hot water and toilets can be basic, yet the shelters are safe and well managed. Meals along the way are simple vegetarian dishes that keep you sustained at altitude.
The three day kora is about 53 kilometers. Day one is gentle, day two is the most challenging because of the climb to Drolma La Pass, and day three is again easy. The second day may feel long and tiring, especially because you cross above 5600 meters. Some pilgrims may need oxygen support on this day. Horses, yaks, and porters are available for those who want extra help.
Who this tour is for
Our 15 day Kailash Mansarovar Yatra journey is designed for pilgrims and travelers who want a complete spiritual circuit with a safe and steady pace. It is suitable for people of many fitness levels as long as they are in normal health and ready for high altitude travel. We generally welcome yatris from 18 to 75 years of age.
Even if you are not an experienced trekker, this tour is achievable with slow walking, proper rest, and optional horse or porter support during the parikrama. A positive mindset and willingness to adjust to basic conditions matter more than speed.
Health requirement preparation and training
Good health is essential for this pilgrimage. If you have serious heart, lung, kidney, or circulation problems, please seek medical advice before joining. High altitude can intensify existing conditions.
To prepare, begin light training a few weeks before departure. Regular brisk walking, stair climbing, breathing exercises, and simple stretching are very helpful. If you already exercise, maintain your routine and add a few longer walks. Mental preparation is equally important. The kora region is basic and remote, so patience, teamwork, and calmness make the journey smoother.
Altitude sickness and acclimatization
Most nights on this trip are spent above 3000 meters, and by Saga and Darchen you are sleeping around 4500 meters. The kora itself stays close to 5000 meters with the highest point at Drolma La. Because you gain altitude quickly by vehicle, acclimatization must be taken seriously.
We plan the itinerary with gradual elevation, including several days in Kathmandu, a rest and walk day in Kerung, and a steady approach to Darchen via Saga and Mansarovar. Still, mild symptoms like headache, tiredness, or shortness of breath can happen. Rest, warm fluids, slow movement, and avoiding alcohol help greatly. If needed, common altitude medicines may be used with your doctor’s approval. Our guide carries oxygen and will assist immediately if symptoms grow stronger. In rare cases, descending is the safest option.
Accommodation meals and drinks
In Kathmandu you stay in a comfortable three or four star hotel with private bathroom and hot shower. In Syabrubesi or Timure the stay is in a clean lodge with basic comfort. In Tibet up to Darchen we use standard hotels with warm rooms and good bedding.
During the kora at Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk, accommodation is monastery or government guest house style with shared rooms. Bedding is simple but warm. If rooms are full in peak season, we arrange tents near the guest house area.
Meals are full vegetarian throughout the tour, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Food is simple, hot, and suitable for altitude. Drinking water is available, but we recommend carrying a thermos so you can drink warm water regularly.
Transportation
All travel is by private tourist vehicle based on group size, such as jeep, van, or bus. This includes airport transfers, Kathmandu to border, Kerung, Saga, Mansarovar, Darchen, Tarboche, and return to Kathmandu.
Hiring horses, yaks, and porters for the kora is optional and not included in the main package, but our guide will arrange them safely and at fair rates if you wish.
Communication and internet
Local SIM cards are the best way to stay connected. In Kathmandu you can buy Namaste or Ncell SIM cards easily. In Kerung you can purchase Chinese SIM cards such as China Mobile, China Unicom, or China Telecom.
Most towns and hotels along the route have wifi, but the network around Kailash during the kora is weak or sometimes unavailable. Social media sites are restricted in China, so travelers who want access should set up a VPN before leaving Kathmandu.
Rules and regulations for Tibet and Kailash travel
Foreign travelers must enter Tibet through an organized group and a registered agency. Independent travel is not allowed. A licensed Tibetan guide, private vehicle, and driver are mandatory while in Tibet.
Permits are required for Tibet and the Kailash region, so booking at least four to six weeks in advance is important. You must send passport copies and photos during confirmation. Your passport should be valid for a minimum of six months and have at least two or three blank pages.
Essential permits and visa
Two main documents are necessary for this journey, Chinese group visa and Tibet travel permit. For the Kailash region, additional permits are also required, such as the alien travel permit, military permit, and foreign affairs permit.
We handle the Tibet travel permit and group visa in Kathmandu, while our Tibetan partners manage the regional permits inside Tibet. The group visa is issued for everyone together, so the entire group must enter and exit Tibet on the same dates.
