Nepal’s northern Himalayan region, the Manaslu Region, offers some of the most breathtaking trekking experiences the nation has to offer. A prominent trip that is easily overlooked is the Manaslu Circuit. Nestled between the Annapurnas and the Ganesh Himal, this breathtaking path is sometimes eclipsed by its more well-known cousin, the Annapurna Circuit.
The Sanskrit word “Manasa,” which means “Intellect” or “Soul,” is the source of the word “Manaslu.” This region was first made accessible to trekkers in 1992, and because it’s a physically challenging walk, not many people go there, giving it a distinct “pioneer” atmosphere.
The Manaslu region is a prohibited area that needs many permits to enter. As a result, this valley has maintained its cultural character and is not swamped by crowds of trekkers. Travelling through Tibetan-style villages along historic paths that were formerly a route for exchanging salt with Tibet is like travelling back in time.
The trek will pass through woods, lowland farming areas with rice fields that seem to be carved easily into the slope, and the Budhi Gandaki Gorge, where crystal-clear streams scream by. Trekkers can enjoy traditional meals and local hospitality by staying at teahouses along the trail.
As one ascends farther into the mountains, it is evident how dominant Tibetan culture is in the Tsum Valley. Sending up good thoughts and wishes to the skies, pass by mani walls, prayer wheels, chortens, and Tibetan flags floating in the breeze. The Manaslu Conservation Area, which is home to the endangered snow leopard, also lies in this region.
You may have an incredible trekking experience by combining this with imposing glaciated peaks that soar to over 8000 meters. The spectacular views of Manaslu almost make up for the altitude here, which is an issue. Larkya La Pass, at 5,106 meters/16,751 feet, is typically slippery and coated with snow.

The spring and autumn pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons are the ideal times to accomplish the Manaslu trek. In particular, the following months are said to be the best for the trek:
Spring (March to May)
The ideal time of year is said to be in the spring, which runs from March to May. Though it is becoming a bit cooler, especially at higher elevations, the weather is mostly clear. Flowers are in bloom, and the mornings are bright.
The Himalayan peaks are clearly seen in the springtime thanks to exceptional visibility and often calm weather.
Summer/Monsoon (June to August)
Avoid the summer months of June through August. Warm, humid weather with limited visibility due to clouds and mist is caused by the monsoon. This time of year presents a significant risk of landslides and leeches.
There are several landslide zones in the Manaslu Region, which were among the locations most severely damaged by the 2015 earthquake; they can be especially hazardous during rainy weather.
Fall / Autumn (September to November)
September through November is the ideal time of year to go trekking in Nepal. The skies are usually clear, and the weather is steady and dry. Comfortable temperatures and superb visibility provide breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
This is a more safer time of year to trek because there is a decreased chance of weather-related natural disasters.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is another off-season for trekking. At higher elevations, the winter months of December through February bring extremely low temperatures. This time of year is not suited for the Manaslu Circuit Trek because of snow and ice.
The weather is unpredictable, and snow may cause pathways to change drastically in a few hours. The trek passes over glacial moraines; due to severe snowfall, passing the Larkya La pass is almost impossible, and the resort at Dharmasla closed at this period.
This trek has been characterized as moderate to strenuous. Difficulty ratings are based on several factors, including hiking hours, distance, altitude gain, and more.
However, acclimatization and altitude sickness are the main issues. Regarding the route itself, the majority of the trails are in decent shape. Since walking doesn’t involve any technological knowledge, it’s rather simple.
A few instances exist, such as where the route veers around landslides, where conditions might get a little challenging. One of the hardest parts of the Manaslu circle trip is getting over the 5106-meter Larkya La Pass. It is difficult to ascend and traverse the pass because of its high altitude. You might get altitude sickness.
Despite being a high-pass trek, Manaslu has a lower illness rate than comparable Nepalese base camp treks. All because the walk begins at 750 meters below sea level in Sotikhola and rises steadily to 5,160 meters at Larke Pass over the course of ten days.
Setting up the permits. For walking the Manaslu Circuit, you require a unique permit known as a restricted area permit. There are distinct terms, criteria, and procedures related to obtaining permission.
The trekking path of the Manaslu Circuit is lengthy, which adds to the trek’s difficulty. Your route is 122 kilometres long and has a significant amount of elevation gain. There are days when trekking exceeds 15 kilometres.
